Biplane fighter aces

Italy

Tenente Bussoli

In June 1940 Bussoli served in the 8o Gruppo, 2o Stormo Autonomo C.T., which was equipped with Fiat CR.42s. The unit was at this time operating over Libya.

In the early morning on 11 June 26 Blenheims from 45, 55 and 113 Squadrons attacked the Italian landing ground at El Adem. No enemy fighters were reported met, but 55 Squadron encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire; one Blenheim crashed into the sea in flames, one crash-landed, and a third was so badly damaged that it was forced to make a crash-landing at Sidi Barrani, where it burst into flames. However, at this time seven CR.42s of 8o Gruppo reported attacking nine Blenheims near El Adem and claimed two of these, one crew becoming POWs. One of the claims was made by Bussoli.
It is possible that the bombers crews were so intent on their first attack of the war that they didn’t see the attacking fighters.

In the early afternoon on the same day two CR.42s of 2o Stormo reported intercepting three Blenheims, one being claimed shot down by Bussoli.

Bussoli ended the war with 2 biplane victories.
