Sergente Vittorio Ghini

In August 1941, Sergente Vittorio Ghini served in the 393a Squadriglia, 160o Gruppo CT. This unit was at the time equipped with Fiat CR.42s.

On 10 August, the 160o Gruppo (375a, 393a and 394a Squadriglie) arrived at Tamet, Libya, with CR.42s to replace 18o Gruppo (which returned to Italy).

In the early afternoon on 25 September, Sergente Ghini claimed a Blenheim over Benghazi as a probable.
This combat can’t be verified with Commonwealth records.

On 18 June 1943, three B-26B groups escorted by P-38s, undertook the long flight to north-east Sardinia to attack docks and shipping at Olbia. They experienced heavy attacks by fighters and Flak
Three 319th BG B-26s were lost, two over the targets and a third over the sea off the south-west coast. The lost bombers were B-26B 41-18603 Our Baby from 437th BS which was shot down over Olbia with the pilot 1st Lieutenant Roger L. Zeller and four of the crew becoming PoWs while one of the crew was KiA, B-26B 41-18291 from the 437th BS, which was shot down by fighters 32 km south-west of the coast of Sardinia at 10:30 with the pilot 1st Lieutenant James L. Schoonover and his crew KiA and B-26B 41-34318 from the 438th BS, which was shot down by fighters over Olbia at 10:00 with the pilot Captain John B. Bear and two of his crew becoming PoWs while two of the crew were KiA.
At Olbia harbour the cargo ship Conegliano (7,997 tons) was hit by bombs at 10:40 and set on fire; this could not be put out and the ship finally blew up at 16:00.
Over Olbia the 319th BG’s gunners claimed four Axis fighters destroyed plus two probables. All claims were made by gunner from the 437th BS between 07:10-12:00:

Private J. A Piccozzi claimed one Bf 110
At the same time the P-40s of the 325th FG swept over the landing grounds in southern Sardinia dropping fragmentation bombs and strafing. The pilots of these fighters claimed a Bf 109 and Fi 156 WNr. 1250 in the air at 09:45, adding two more aircraft on the ground, three probables and three damaged. The Storch which they had brought down was on the strength of Verb./St.55 with Unteroffizier Heinz Fuchsig being KiA and one passenger WiA. Claiming pilots for the air-to-air victories were 2nd Lieutenant Warren F. Penney from the 317th FS, who claimed a Bf 109 south of Sardinia and 2nd Lieutenant Robert H. Rogers from the 318th FS, who claimed the Fi 156 over Villacidro.
The 47th Wing's B-25Cs were also despatched to this island, the 310th BG attacking shipping and the town at Golfo Aranci. Their crews reported attacks by 45-50 interceptors over the target, 20-25 of which attacked the bombers, seven Bf 109s were claimed shot down by the gunners, plus one probable over Golfo Aranci between 07:45-11:55 without losses. They also reported seeing the escorts shoot down at least four fighters, one of which blew up. Claiming gunner were:

On the conclusion of this raid the war diary of the 310th BG’s 428th BS noted that gunner Staff Sergeant Alvin I. Langford had gained his fifth victory (4 and 1 probable?).
The 17th BG reported combat over Olbia at 10:35 when gunner Technical Sergeant T. H. Manning in B-26B 41-18196 claimed one destroyed Bf 109.
Escorts were provided by the 1st and 82nd FGs. The latter unit's 36 pilots reported that the B-25s were engaged continuously along the coast all the way back to southern Sardinia. During this period the inexperienced P-38 pilots of the 82nd FG heavily overclaimed when they claimed 17 fighters shot down, two probables and six damaged predominantly identified as 'Italian types' at 09:55 over Golfo Arcani. The 1st FG, arriving slightly earlier at 09:30, claimed only two, one probable and one damaged Bf 109s 16 km east of the Gulf of Orosei but lost two P-38s. Claiming pilots were from the 27th FG:

P-38sG 42-12923 from 27th FS, was shot down by enemy aircraft over the Gulf of Orosei at 09:45 with the pilot 2nd Lieutenant Robert C. Britz becoming MiA and second P-38 from 1st FG was damaged. P-38G 42-12876 from 96th FS, 82nd FG, failed to return from Golfo Aranci and was last seen at 10:00 with 2nd Lieutenant George E. Wehman Jr. KiA.
Against the US formations Luftwaffe Bf 109 Gs from II./JG 51 and III./JG 77 claimed six and one probable bombers and four fighters without loss:

Oberleutnant Eberhard Niese of 7./JG 77 claimed one B-25 at 1000m altitude west of Capo Testa at 10:05
Leutnant Wolfgang Ernst of 9./JG 77 claimed one B-25 at 800m altitude west of Capo Ferro at 10:08
Oberfeldwebel Johann Pichler of 7./JG 77 claimed one P-38F at 100m altitude north-east of the coast of Sardinia at 10:12
Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Hackler of 8./JG 77 claimed one B-25 at 2300m altitude north-west of Olbia at 10:14
Oberleutnant Eberhard Niese of 8./JG 77 claimed one Boston at 2000m altitude west of Olbia at 10:20
Oberleutnant Karl Rammelt of 4./JG 51 claimed one B-26 at 2500m altitude 85km west of Botte at 11:22
Unteroffizier Friederich Jacobs of 6./JG 51 claimed one B-26 at 4500m altitude south-west of Sardinia at 11:30
Unteroffizier Karl-Heinz Böttner of 8./JG 77 claimed one probable (n.b.) B-25
Regia Aeronautica units claimed two bombers and one and one shared P-38. The Re.2001s from 160o Gruppo were in combat over Venafiorita between 09:40-10:20 and Capitano Livio Forasteri (394a Squadriglia) claimed one Boston (B-26?), Sergente Ghini (394a Squadriglia) claimed one P-38 and Maresciallo Duilio Bernardi (393a Squadriglia) claimed one shared P-38 (shared with a German pilot). The MC.202s from the 24o Gruppo reported combat with Bostons between 09:45-10:40 and made several claims. Claiming pilots were:
Capitano Umberto Bellandi (354a Squadriglia) one damaged over Olbia
Sergente Giovanni Sempio (354a Squadriglia) one probably destroyed north of Lake Coghinas
Sottotenente Antonio 'Max' Longhini (355a Squadriglia) one destroyed near Calangianus
Sottotenente Evasio Cavalli (355a Squadriglia) two damaged over Olbia and one probably destroyed over Monte Beccazitu
Sergente Deplano Mazzini (355a Squadriglia) one damaged over Olbia
RE.2001 MM7261 from (394a Squadriglia) was shot down by enemy fighters with Sergente Dante Baiutti MiA while a second Re.2001 from the same Squadriglia was damaged in combat and force-landed near San Teodoro with Sergente Angelo Birago WiA. The 354a Squadriglia suffered one MC.202 shot down by fighter with Sottotenente Dino Serpentini MiA, one shot up by fighters and force-landed at Venafiorita with Capitano Bellandi WiA and one damaged by return fire with Sottotenente Silvano Dessanti safe. The 355a Squadriglia suffered three damaged MC.202s by return fire but the pilots, Sottotenente Cavalli, Sergente Athos Cecchini and Sottotenente Longhini were all safe.
AA gunners claimed six more aircraft, two by German Flak over Olbia and four by Italian AA over Olbia at 09:50.

Ghini ended the war with one probable biplane victory and a total of 1.
