Pavel Yeliseyevich Agafonov

1907 –

Pavel Agafonov was born in 1907.

He was CO of a Zvena in the 109 IAE, 36 IAB, in the Kiev Military District.

In October 1936 he went to Spain (arriving on 20 October) as a member of the first group of volunteers to fly in the Spanish Civil War.
In Spain, he used the nom de guerre Pedro Jimenez. He served in Escuadrilla Rychagov, which was equipped with I-15s.

By 9 December, he was credited with 2 He 51s.

Agafonov left Spain on 7 April 1937.
During his time in Spain he claimed 5 and 3 shared victories flying the I-15.

Later he served in China and during the Second World War he was CO of the 97 SAD.

From 9 August to 3 September, he took part in war against Japan in Manchuria, receiving the Victory over Japan award at the end of September.
