Podpolkovnik Ivan Mikhaylovich Artamonov

1912 –

Artamonov was born in 1912.

In 1933, he trained at the flight school in Leningrad.

He flew in the 121 IAE, 95 IAB, Transcaucasian Military District, before volunteering for service in Spain.

He arrived in Spain on 14 January 1937 and served as a Leitenant in 1a/26 (I-15).

He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner on 17 July 1937 and left Spain on 26 July.

Artamonov is reported to have claimed 2 biplane victories in Spain during 95 operational sorties.

In 1940, Major Artamonovwas CO in an Eskadrilya of 67 IAP, which at the beginning of WWII was still flying I-16s.

On 12 July 1941, he claimed a Bf 109.

During July he was posted from 67 IAP to 88 IAP and he remained with this unit until September, the same year.

Between January and August 1942, he served in 632 IAP.

From July 1943 to June (alternatively March) 1944, he was CO of 651 IAP NVO flying P-40s.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin on 31 May 1945.

As a Podpolkovnik, he served in 34 IAP during the short war with Japan in August and September 1945, flying La-7s.

Artamonov ended the war with 2 biplane victories.
During his career he was also decorated with the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class on 20 September 1945 and two more Order of the Red Banner in 1946 and 1951.
