Kapitan Ivan Avdeevich Avekov HSU

19 May 1919 – 17 April 1943

Ivan Avekov was born on 19 May 1919.

He joined the Red Army in 1937.

When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, starshii leitenant Avekov served with 252 IAP, which was equipped with Polikarpov I-15bis and I-153s.

He left 252 IAP in September 1941 and was posted to 211 IAP in February 1942.
This unit was equipped with Yak-1s and he served with this only for a short while, leaving in March.

Later he was posted to 519 IAP, which also was equipped with Yak-1s.

On 20 March 1942, he claimed three Bf 109s over Vorya, the last of them being claimed in a ”taran” ramming attack.

Kapitan Avekov was killed in air combat near Lipetsk on 17 April 1943.

At the time of his death, Avekov was credited with at least 4 biplane victories and a total of 10.
These had been claimed in 178 missions.

He received a posthumous Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin on 24 August 1943.
