Mikhail Gorbanev was born in 1910.
Starshiy leitenant Gorbanec took part in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War in 1939-1940 where he flew Polikarpov I-153s in 38 IAP but without claiming anything.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, he was still flying I-153s in 38 IAP.
On 14 August, three I-153s from 38 IAP claimed one Ju 88 Over Kobylkino and one Bf 110 over Ramushevo. It seems that two of the pilots involved in these claims were Gorbanev and Lazar Chapchakhov.
On 19 August, four I-153s from 38 IAP claimed one Bf 109 over Suslovo and one over Utochkino. One of the claiming pilots was Gorbanev. It’s possible that one of the other claiming pilots was Aleksandr Yelkhov since it’s known that he claimed two shared Bf 109s during the day.
He was posted away from 38 IAP in August 1941.
In January 1942, he was posted to 42 IAP and with this unit he flew LaGG-3s and Yak-7Bs.
On 4 August 1942, Gorbanev and Fedor Shinkarenko claimed one Ju 88 each over Pogoreloye Gorodishche on the Bryansk Front. Aleksandr Osipov (LaGG-3-37) claimed a shared Ju 88 together with two other pilots north of Pogoreloye Gorodishche and a Bf 109 as a single victory south-west of Pogoreloye Gorodishche.
Aleksandr Legchakov (LaGG-3-37) claimed a shared Ju 88 together with anoth pilot over Kutkovo.
Between Voskresenskoye and Bor, Gorbanev and Aleksandr Legchakov (LaGG-3-37) claimed a shared Ju 88 on 5 August.
Major Gorbanev was killed in air combat on 10 March 1943.
At the time of his death, Gorbanev was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 7.
