Sergey Gulyayev was born in 1918.

He graduated from Borisoglebskaya Flight School in 1938.

Leitenant Gulyayev took part in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War flying I-153s in 38 IAP between December 1939 and March 1940.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, starshiy leitenant Gulyayev still served in 38 IAP. This regiment was still equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

On 16 July 1941 (?), the airfield on which he was based on was bombed and he was hospitalised.
He remained in hospital until 6 July 1942. When he returned to the regiment he served as eskadrilya adjutant until June 1943 when he returned to flying duties.

On 3 May 1942, 38 IAP had become a guard’s unit and renamed to 21 GIAP.

Starshiy leitenant Gulyayev was killed on 17 December 1943 when he tried to land his burning fighter, which had been hit during air combat.

At the time of his death, Gulyayev was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 5.
These had been claimed during 58 combat missions.
