Starshiy Leitenant Sergey Petrovich Makarov

1918 – 25 March 1943

Sergey Makarov was born in 1918.

He graduated from Borisoglebskaya flight school in 1939.

Leitenant Makarov was posted to 738 IAP in October 1941. This regiment was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s and began combat operation in the Grozny Air Defense District on 12 October.

In September 1942, the regiment was transferred to the Transcaucasian Front.

Leitenant Makarov claimed 738 IAP’s first known victory on 12 September 1942, when he claimed a Bf 109 in the area of Terek station.

In January and February, the regiment started to receive I-16 and small numbers of LaGG-3s.

On 25 March 1943, starshiy leitenant Makarov destroyed a Bf 110 in a ”taran” ramming attack but was killed while doing so.

At the time of his death, Makarov was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 2.
