Vladimir Motylev was born in 1916.

He graduated from Borisoglebskaya flight school in 1938.

In July 1941, mladshiy leitenant Motylev was posted to 29 IAP. This unit was at the time equipped with Polikarpov I-153s and operated on the Western Front.

On 6 December 1941, 29 IAP became a guard’s unit and renamed 1 GIAP.

Between 9 December 1941 and 8 January 1942, 1 GIAP retrained on Hurricanes.

On 14 March, the unit retruned to combat on the Kalinin Front with their Hurricanes.

On 26 April 1942, leitenant Motylev was killed in air combat.

At the time of his death, Motylev was credited with 2 biplane victories.
This had been claimed during 128 combat missions as of 15 November 1941.
