Mladshiy Leytenant Aleksey Tikhonovich Sevastyanov HSU

16 February 1917 - 23 April 1942

Aleksey Sevastyanov was born on 16 February 1917 in the Kalinin district.

He joined the Soviet Army in 1936 and graduated from the Kacha Military Pilot School in 1939.

He took part in the Second World War from the German invasion on 22 June 1941.

Sevastyanov reportedly claimed two shared enemy aircraft and one observation balloon in 47 sorties and 22 air combats.

In November 1941, Sevastyanov served in the 26 IAP-PVO. During this time, the unit was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

At 22:00 on 4 November, he made a “taran”-attack on a He 111H-5 5J+DM (WNr.3816) from 1./KG4 flown by Oberleutnant Wilhelm Well over Leningrad after having run out of ammunition.
Sevastyanov parachuted safely.
The bomber crashed in the Taurina garden and the tail was stored in Leningrad’s history museum.
The entire German crew was listed as missing but it seems that at least Well survived since he appeared in an article titled “Characters of the Fascist Officers” in Leningrad Pravda on 14 November 1941.

Sevastyanov flew more than 100 sorties and totally claimed two victories and two shared before being killed in action over Ladoga, 2.5 km from Rakhya, on 23 April 1942.
He is buried in Leningrad.

He was awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin posthumously on 6 June 1942.

At the time of his death, Sevastyanov was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 2.
