Major Boris Nikolayevich Surin

1907 – 22 June 1941

Boris Surin was born in 1908.

He graduated from the flight school in Borisoglebskaya in 1934.

In June 1941, major Surin was commander of the 123 IAP of the 10 SmAD. The unit was at this time based in the Kobrin-Pinsk area. The unit was partially re-equipped with Yak-1s but as late as 19 June only twenty Yak-1s were assembled at Imenin airfield and the unit thus started the war still equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

On 22 June 1941 he flew four missions in the Kobrin area and claimed his and the units first victory when he shot down a Bf 109 at 05:00.
Later during the day, he claimed two more Bf 109s but was unfortunately badly wounded in his last combat and crashed to his death upon landing.
123 IAP suffered badly during the first day losing nine I-153s and eight pilots and at 13:30 only twenty serviceable aircraft remained.

At the time of his death, Surin was credited with 3 victories claimed while flying biplanes.
