Biplane fighter aces

Soviet Union

Podpolkovnik Ivan Pavlovich Makarenko

1908 –

Ivan Makarenko was born in 1908.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, major Makarenko served in 253 IAP, which was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s. This unit operated in the Kiev region.

Three I-153 from 253 IAP claimed one He 111 and one Bf 109 as shared in the Kiev region on 26 June. It seems that these were claimed by major Makarenko, leitenant Nikolay Abramchuk and leitenant Aleksandr Surkov.
One additional Bf 109 was claimed by major Makarenko.

In March 1942, he was posted away from 253 IAP and instead posted to 786 IAP as CO.

On 16 September 1944, he was decorated with the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class.

He left 786 IAP in October 1944.

Makarenko ended the war with 2 biplane victories.

Post-war, he was decorated with the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class on 11 March 1985.
