Podpolkovnik Aleksandr Andreyevich Surkov
1908 –
Aleksandr Surkov was born in 1908.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, leitenant Surkov served in 253 IAP, which was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s. This unit operated in the Kiev region.
Three I-153 from 253 IAP claimed one He 111 and one Bf 109 as shared in the Kiev region on 26 June. It seems that these were claimed by major Ivan Makarenko, leitenant Nikolay Abramchuk and leitenant Surkov.
One additional Bf 109 was claimed by major Ivan Makarenko.
On 4 July, the I-153s from 253 IAP intercepted many German aircraft in the Kiev region and during the day, they made claims for three shared He 111s and three shared Bf 109s destroyed. These claims were shared among nine pilots including kapitan Vasiliy Mal’tsev, starshiy leitenant Boris Grebenkov, starshiy leitenant Semen Makeyev, leitenant Nikolay Abramchuk, leitenant Surkov and serzhant Ivan Kashirkin.
Later in July 1941, he was posted to 89 IAP. This unit also initially flew I-153s and operated on the South-Western Front.
In October, he left 89 IAP and was posted to 91 IAP. This unit was equipped with LaGG-3s.
He was posted away from 91 IAP in April 1942.
In October 1942, he was posted to 875 IAP.
On 18 March 1943, 875 IAP became a guard’s unit and renamed to 66 GIAP.
He left 66 GIAP on 22 February 1944, when he was posted to 64 GIAP as CO.
He remained as CO until 31 December 1945.
Surkov ended the war with 8 shared biplane victories and a total of 5.
These had been claimed during 120 combat missions and 21 air combats.
During his career, he was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner (twice), The Order of Kutuzov 3rd Class, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class and the Order of the Red Star.
