Soviet Union
Starshiy Leitenant Ivan Pavlovich Petrov
1920 – 2 October 1943
Ivan Petrov was born in 1920.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, starshiy leitenant Petrov served in 7 IAP, which was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.
At 20:10 on 21 July, he claimed a Fokker D.XXI together with another pilot over Viipuri.
This was Fokker D.XXI FR-82 of LLv 14, which was shot down and vänrikki Egil Törnudd was KIA.
Petrov was decorated with the Order of the Red Star on 26 November 1941.
He was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner on 26 February 1942.
On 7 March 1942, 7 IAP became a guard’s unit and renamed to 14 GIAP.
The unit was withdrawn from combat on 12 May 1942, to retrain on the Yak-1.
On 30 August, they returned to combat on the Leningrad Front.
Ivan Dubovik, starshiy leitenant Ivan Petrov and kapitan Mikhail Lobanov claimed a shared Bf 109 together with a fourth pilot over Fedorovskoye on 23 March 1943.
On 3 April, five pilots from 14 GIAP claimed three FW 190s shot down at three different places; Sinyavino, west of Apraksin Gorodok and Berezovka. Pilots included in these claims were Ivan Dubovik, starshiy leitenant Petrov, Vasiliy Mochalov and kapitan Mikhail Lobanov.
Petrov was decorated with the Order the Patriotic War 2nd Class on 2 May 1943.
Ivan Dubovik claimed a FW 190 over Kolchanovo station on 9 July. It’s possible that starshiy leitenant Petrov claimed a second FW 190 in the same combat since it’s known that he made a claim during the day.
On 2 October 1943, Petrov was killed in an accident while on vacation.
At the time of his death, Petrov was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 4.
These had been claimed during 367 combat missions and 36 air combats.
