Petr Povoroznikov graduated from the flight school in Borisoglebskaya (KKZ) in 1935.

In March 1940, kapitan Povoroznikov served in the 68 OIAP, which was taking part in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War. The 68 OIAP was equipped with a mix of fighters and 1-3 Eskadrilia were equipped with I-16s and 4 Eskadrilia was equipped with I-153s.

On 5 March 1940, ylikersantti Martti Perälä (GL-278) claimed an I-153 between 13:25 and 14:20 over Äyräpää. This was an I-153 from 68 IAP, 13 VA.
According to 68 IAP’s war diary, pilots kapitan Povoroznikov and Semin, while escorting a group of SB bombers, saw a flight of four Bulldogs. Two Bulldogs escaped to the clouds, while the other two entered into a combat. At 15:40, Povoroznikov shot down one Bulldog in the region of Vuoksenranta. Semin got onto the tail of the other enemy aircraft and while making a tight turn at the altitude of 150-200m got into a spin and crashed with no apparent cause.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, kapitan Povoroznikov served in 170 IAP. This regiment was equipped with Polikarpov I-16s on the Western Front.

On 1 July, six I-16s from 170 IAP claimed two shared Ju 88s over Mogilev airfield. Known involved pilots were kapitan Povoroznikov and kapitan Nikifor Livanskiy.

On 13 July, Povoroznikov didn’t return from a combat mission and was reported missing.
He returned on repatriation after the end of the war.

Povoroznikov ended the war with 1 biplane victory.
