Biplane fighter aces

Soviet Union

Kapitan Ivan K. Tumanov

Tumanov was a veteran from the Spanish Civil War.

In 1941, he served as CO of an eskadrilya of the 72 SmAP-SF, which was equipped with a mixture of Polikarpov I-15bis and I-153s. The unit operated in the defence of Murmansk.

On 29 June, Ju 88s attacked Vayenga airfield. The I-153s from 72 SmAP-SF intercepted these and Vasiliy Adonkin claimed a Ju 88 and three more shared as did leitenant Fedor Plotko. The three shared Ju 88s were shared among five pilots including Adonkin, leitenant Plotko and starshiy leitenant Viktor Alagurov. A sixth Ju 88 was claimed by Tumanov.

He claimed another enemy aircraft on 9 August 1941 while flying an I-153.
This claim was probably made against Luftflotte 5, which attacked Vayenga twice during the day and the pilots of 72 SmAP-SF took off and fought vigorously against both raids.

Tumanov ended the war with 2 biplane victories.
