Kapitan Vasiliy Grigorevich Kashtanov

1909 – 21 August 1941

Kashtanov was born in 1909.

Kapitan Kashtanov served as CO of the 4./38 IAP during the Winter War. This unit was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

On 17 February 1940, kapitan Kashtanov and starshiy leytenant Shepetov of 4./38 IAP claimed two Fokkers at Turku.
These claims can’t be verified with Finnish records.

Kapitan Kashtanov flew 27 operational sorties during the Winter War.

On 17 July, 38 IAP claimed four Bf 110s. One was claimed by kapitan Kashtanov (I-153 or I-16) over Staraya Russa airfield. The other three were individual claims by three I-153s pilots; leytenant Konstantin Gorin, mladshiy leytenant Vasiliy Belous and mladshiy leytenant Nikolay Gorbunov. It’s possible that these claims also were made over Staraya Russa airfield.
Leytenant Gorin was killed during the day and it’s also possible that this was during this combat.

On 21 August 1941, Kashtanov claimed one enemy aircraft in a ”taran” ramming attack.
The taran-attack took place over Demyansk and Kashtanov was killed.

At the time of his death, Kashtanov was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 7.
