Kapitan Vasiliy Grigorevich Kashtanov

Kashtanov was born in 1909.

Kapitan Kashtanov served as CO of the 4./38 IAP during the Winter War. This unit was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

On 7 February 1940, Kapitan Kashtanov and Starshiy Leytenant Shepetov of 4./38 IAP claimed two Fokkers at Turku.
These claims can’t be verified with Finnish records.

Kapitan Kashtanov flew 27 operational sorties during the Winter War.

On 21 August 1941, Kashtanov claimed one enemy aircraft in a ”taran” ramming attack.
The taran-attack took place over Demyansk and Kashtanov was killed.

At the time of his death, Kashtanov was credited with 1 biplane victory and a total of 6.
