Vasiliy Mal’tsev was born in 1906.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, kapitan Mal’tsev served in 253 IAP. This regiment was equipped with Polikarpov I-153s.

On 4 July, the I-153s from 253 IAP intercepted many German aircraft in the Kiev region and during the day, they made claims for three shared He 111s and three shared Bf 109s destroyed. These claims were shared among nine pilots including kapitan Mal’tsev, starshiy leitenant Boris Grebenkov, starshiy leitenant Semen Makeyev, leitenant Nikolay Abramchuk, leitenant Aleksandr Surkov and serzhant Ivan Kashirkin.

Malk’tsev left 253 IAP in July 1941 and in August he was posted to 66 ShAP.

He left 66 ShAP in October 1941 and was posted to 820 ShAP in May 1942 but left this unit already during the same month. On 27 May 1942, he was written out of the Red Army due to unknown reasons.

Mal’tsev ended the war with 1 biplane victory.
This had been claimed during 82 combat missions (as of 15 September 1941).
