Kapitan Vasiliy Danilovich Volovikov

1915 –

Vasiliy Volovikov was born in 1915.

Volovikov took part in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940 while serving in 72 SmAP-SF while flying Polikarpov I-15bis.

When Germany attacked the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, he was still serving in 72 SmAP-SF but was at the time flying Polikarpov I-153s.

The Polikarpov I-153s of 72 SmAP-SF were in combat over Vayenga airfield on 3 July when it was attacked by Ju 88s escorted by Bf 109s.
Starshiy leytenant Volovikov claimed one Ju 88 south of the airfield and a second over the airfield. He also claimed a Bf 109 over the airfield. Konstantin Babiy claimed a shared Ju 88 with three other pilots near the airfield.

Starshiy leitenant Volovikov and leitenant Yefim Vasil’yev claimed a shared Ju 87 over Vayenga airfield on 22 July.
Leitenant Vasil’yev was killed in air combat during the day (same combat?).

Two Ju 87s were claimed over Vyyev-Navolok as shared between three I-153s pilots from 72 SmAP-SF on 26 July. Two of these pilots were starshiy leytenant Volovikov and mladshiy leytenant Dmitriy Amosov.

On 9 August, 72 SmAP-SF intercepted Ju 88s over Murmansk and claimed to have shot down five of the bombers as shared among eight pilots including starshiy leytenant Vasiliy Babushkin, starshiy leytenant Volovikov and starshiy leytenant Viktor Alagurov.
Starshiy leytenant Babushkin was however shot down and killed in this combat.

Starshiy leytenant Volovikov, mladshiy leytenant Dmitriy Amosov and Vasiliy Adonkin claimed a shared Bf 109 over Rosta on 13 August.

On 15 August, starshiy leytenant Volovikov and mladshiy leytenant Dmitriy Amosov claimed a shared Bf 110 over Murmansk.

On 17 January 1942, the 72 SmAP-SF became a guard’s unit and renamed to 2 GSmAP-SF.

He was to continue flying with Hurricanes and Kittyhawks.

He suffered a serious injury and hospitalized. He didn’t come back to combat after this. Instead he was sent to school and after graduation was sent to teach for the rest of the war.

Volovikov ended the war with a total of 5 biplane victories.
During his career he was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner (twice).
